Join me on a journey of 8 months of physical therapy following a hysterectomy! Doodling helped me process this experience — and now takes the form of a zine!
I was in Asheville during Helene, and while my home only experienced minor damage, I did experience all of the other events surrounding the storm — utility loss, no cell communication, difficulty leaving the area in the days following.
A crucial part of my own recovery included rebuilding and processing what I lost.
This print was the first piece of art made in the basement studio that was flooded, on top of the work tables that I had to rebuild after water damage. The mountain image was recreated from an iPhone photo that I took when we came back into town after being displaced for 2 weeks. We traveled the highway that was previously closed due to a mudslide and saw much of the damage for the first time; I snapped a photo. The tree ring print is from a log in the backyard — from the tree that came down in the storm and fell the “right” way, not on to the house. The log was processed by standing and burning and brushing until the rings separated and I was able to make a copy.
You might see a simple image, but I carry this story every time I look at this work.
